How Rhinoplasty Works

We understand what a personal choice modifying your nose is and the process you will go through when making a final decision. During your consultation, Dr. Durkin will explain the structures of the nose and how they will be impacted by the surgery. His complete understanding of nasal anatomy and physiology, as well as his experience with facial artistry and aesthetics, ensure a successful outcome. Dr. Durkin will also perform a presurgical assessment of your general health, your goals and your desired results. He will work with you to design a custom plan and explain the procedure.

There are two ways to perform rhinoplasty, and Dr. Durkin will tell you which best suits your needs:

  • Closed - all incisions are hidden inside the nose; this approach is mainly used for subtle changes such as removing a hump, narrowing the tip or narrowing the nasal bones or less serious health issues. In a closed procedure there will be no external scarring, internal stitches will be absorbed and you will enjoy a faster recovery.
  • Open - Dr. Durkin will use an external incision between your nostrils in the columella (the tissue between your nostrils); this approach is mainly used for patients requiring more extensive reshaping. In an open procedure there will be more swelling and bruising, and a longer recovery period.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

You must be in general good physical health. It is recommended that you not smoke, use drugs, or drink excessively. You should not be significantly overweight. You will also need to disclose all medical conditions and allergies to Dr. Durkin during your consultation.

If you are seeking a more aesthetic or symmetrical appearance to boost self-esteem or need to correct your nose for improved health (breathe or sleep easier), then rhinoplasty may be right for you. Your facial growth should be complete (typically 17 for women and 21-22 for men).

You will work closely with Dr. Durkin to fully understand what is involved in the procedure and prepare for it. Above all, you must have a positive outlook and realistic goals for surgical outcomes.

Which is the best rhinoplasty option for me?

It depends on your reasons (aesthetic or medical) for having the surgery and Dr. Durkin's assessment. Working closely with you, Dr. Durkin will recommend the option that best suits your needs, including whether you will need a closed or open rhinoplasty.

If you have had a prior rhinoplasty, Dr. Durkin will discuss revision rhinoplasty options with you.

Is rhinoplasty safe?

Rhinoplasty has been undertaken since the mid-1900s and continues to be one of the most popular procedures performed today. More than 200,000 rhinoplasty surgeries are performed in the U.S. every year, and associated risks are minor and significant complications are rare.

Safety is a top priority at Ocean Drive, but there are always some risks with twilight or general anesthesia. Dr. Durkin will discuss these and any other potential risks with you during your health assessment. He will also give you a realistic understanding of expected outcomes and provide pre- and post-operative details. It is paramount that you follow your care team's instructions throughout the recovery process.

What Rhinoplasty Techniques does Dr. Durkin Specialize In?

Dr. Durkin has performed hundreds of rhinoplasties during his career for both aesthetic and health reasons. He has extensive experience across all types of rhinoplasties, closed and open, first surgery or revision.

What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can address structural, cosmetic, or functional issues with the nose while bringing the nose into balance with the rest of your face. It can be performed to tackle cosmetic concerns including a nose that appears too large, small, narrow, flat, wide, round or pointed. It can also improve a hump on the bridge, a crooked nose or oddly shaped nostrils.

Rhinoplasty may also be chosen to address functional issues like a deviated septum, breathing problems, snoring, and to reduce the risk of obstructive sleep apnea.

What happens after rhinoplasty surgery?

After your surgery, a long-acting numbing agent is used to minimize your discomfort. While some swelling is to be expected, post-operative pain can generally be managed with medication. A splint is usually placed on your nose for about one week, depending on the procedure performed. The most noticeable swelling will likely occur for the first 2-3 days; you must avoid blowing your nose during this time.

About half of all rhinoplasty patients will experience some bruising, which typically fades within a few weeks. Though it may take up to a year for all minor swelling to disappear completely, you will start to see significant improvement in your nose's appearance by the time the splint is removed.

Will I need to have any post-procedure touch-ups?

Rhinoplasty is a complicated procedure performed on complex structures and anatomy, there is a chance that some patients may need to have post-surgery touch-ups. About 15 percent of rhinoplasty operations require touch-up procedures.

Do you offer any special accommodations for recovery after a rhinoplasty?

Ocean Drive's patient safety and comfort extend after the procedure, too. Patients have access to overnight suites, personalized medical attention, house calls and private duty nursing. They may also choose continuity of care through Ocean Drive's Medical Spa, Laser Facility, and Make-up Studio.

What types of privacy and/or safety plans do you have in place for recovering patients?

Strict privacy and safety protocols grant patients direct access to overnight suites; VIP entrances, exam rooms and surgical suites; personalized medical attention, house calls, and private duty nursing. All patients may choose continuity of care through Ocean Drive's Medical Spa, Laser Facility, and Make-up Studio.
